Teaching Assistant Course free essay sample

Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments. Keeping a group of children aged seven engaged is key, whilst the teacher is discussing and using speech to explain about the instruments my contribution would best be given by demonstrating in turn how the instruments are correctly to be played and demonstrate the sound the instrument makes. Perhaps moving around the class spending a little time with each child as they pass around the instruments to have their own turn. Helping them where needed to make different sounds and to play them correctly. 2. What might your role be in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, material and equipment for this percussion lesson? Before class I would lay out all the instruments and check to make sure they were in working order and that everything needed to play them was available for it to be played correctly i. At the end of each class I would make sure that the instruments were cleaned and put away neatly so they would be ready for next time. . Describe how you act in class in order to be an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected in pupils? During Class I would hope to contribute in a way that the children would find interesting and keep their attention to the subject and what the teacher was saying.. Keeping things calm, to avoid any misuse or unnecessary noise of the instruments and speaking politely with the children so they felt they can ask for help or any questions they may have. I would move around the class speaking with the pupils in a respectful polite manner, I believe them seeing good behaviour is a great way to learn how to act. I would encourage any good behaviour demonstrated as reinforcement of this will hopefully encourage more. 4. What strategies might you employ to encourage pupils to behave appropriately? Describe how you might react to incidents of bullying and violence. Being prepared before class, to avoid any delays to the lesson or problems occurring if my attention was to be away from the pupils. I would encourage any good behaviour by praising it or maybe even use of incentives such as a star stamp on the hand when a pupil has been attentive. Should there be any incidences of bullying I would intervene and speak with the children involved individually for two reasons, firstly to try to find out from both sides exactly what happened, and to make them feel able to confide in me and be open and honest if they had any problems. I would log details and report this to the class room teacher, and the situation could be acted on accordingly with punishment made where required to ensure the situation wasn’t to reoccur and to make it known to other pupils that bullying will not be ignored. 5. Describe how you might appropriately observe the physical abilities and skills of a nine year old boy. The observation would have to be done without the child feeling they were indeed being ‘watched’ for the observation results to be affective it would have to be done discreetly during a normal school day and throughout various situations i. e During structured classroom time, free playtime, and maybe a P. E lesson therefore allowing me to view the child using as many skills as possible his mental skills, listening ability, interaction and physical abilities.
